Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are making a strong push toward the WNBA playoffs.

The Fever topped the Seattle Storm, 92-75, on Sunday afternoon. Clark had a dominant performance, scoring 23 points while dishing out nine assists. Two of her teammates, Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull, also scored 20-plus points in the blowout win.

Indiana is now 13-15 on the season. The Fever are currently 7th in the 12-team league and the top eight teams make the playoffs. Indiana will need to finish the year strong in order to hold onto a playoff spot.

But they could be losing Clark to a one-game suspension in the future, which is something the team is fearing.

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA – AUGUST 18: Caitlin Clark #22 of the Indiana Fever is bumped by Skylar Diggins-Smith #4 of the Seattle Storm after a second half timeout at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on August 18, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Clark was T’d up on Sunday, in somewhat controversial fashion. She was hit with a technical foul for hitting the bottom of the basket in frustration. The referee didn’t like that, T’ing her up.

That was Clark’s fifth technical foul of the year. If she receives two more, she’ll be suspended for a game, per WNBA rules.

“I got a technical for basically being mad at myself because I missed a 3, and then I went and hit the backboard, and he told me it was disrespectful to the game of basketball,” Clark said postgame. “…It reminded me of the technical I got in college, where I said ‘damn it,’ where it’s like a personal frustration. Had nothing to do with my team, had nothing to do with the reffing, had nothing to do with the other team. It’s just because I’m a competitor.”

She added: “But I think he fired me up to continue to play a lot harder. I thought we got a lot better after that. I want to thank him for that. But overall, I thought once we got to that media timeout around five minutes in the third quarter, I thought we all kind of took a breath. It was all chaos there for two and a half minutes.”

If the Fever lose Clark for a game, it could be a brutal blow to their playoff standing. They are currently 1.5 games up on the No. 8 seed, the Chicago Sky. And they are just 2.0 games behind the No. 6 seed Phoenix Mercury.

Losing Clark for just one game could prove to be costly. The Fever are playing well lately, perhaps primed for a playoff run, but they can’t afford to lose Clark for a game and drop in the standings.

Clark needs to be careful moving forward.
