Peter Fury, the uncle and former trainer of Tyson Fury, has shared his insights on what the heavyweight champion needs to do to defeat Oleksandr Usyk in their upcoming rematch. The two boxing greats first faced off in May, with Usyk emerging victorious by majority decision, capturing all four major titles along with the lineal and Ring Magazine belts.

Both Fury and Usyk acknowledged mistakes in their initial bout, which was a closely contested fight filled with back-and-forth action across all 12 rounds. The pivotal moment came in the ninth round when Usyk landed a significant blow that sent Fury wobbling around the ropes, ultimately influencing the judges’ decision.

Peter Fury, who famously guided Tyson to his 2015 victory over Wladimir Klitschko, criticized the strategy used in the first fight. Speaking on “Froch on Fighting,” he described the approach as “tippy-tippy,” which he believed was unsuitable for Tyson against a skilled mover and elite boxer like Usyk.

“I think he can. We’re looking at a big man 6ft8, 9 who wanted to have a tippy-tippy match with someone who is an elite mover and elite boxer. So I think they got the strategy all wrong for that fight.”

Peter also pointed out the confusion in Fury’s corner during the fight, emphasizing the need for clear and singular direction. He advocated for having one main voice providing instructions, whether it be Tyson’s father or another designated trainer, to ensure coherent guidance during the bout.

“I’m an avid believer that one man should give the instructions. Who is the trainer? If his dad’s the trainer, let his dad do the talking. If the other guy from America is the trainer, let him do the talking. If there’s three or four talking, how are you going to listen to that?”

Peter stressed that Tyson needs to leverage his physical advantages—specifically his size, distance, and weight—to overcome Usyk. By using these attributes effectively, Tyson should be able to dominate the smaller Usyk in the ring.

“How much is he going to dig down and will he get the right advice, who is going to do it? All these things play a factor. If you’ve got two elite fighters together, the big one should overcome the small one in a boxing match because of the attributes if he uses his size, distance, and weight correctly.”

As the December 21 rematch approaches, both fighters are expected to make adjustments and improve upon their previous performances. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if Tyson Fury will implement his uncle’s advice and reclaim his titles from Usyk.
