Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever will open the second half of the WNBA season against the Phoenix Mercury on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Prior to their matchup, the Mercury threw a subtle shot at the Fever rookie.
Phoenix’s official social media account on TikTok posted an edit of a woman saying, “I miss the WNBA, Caitlin [Clark], where are you?”
The video then pans to a young fan at a Mercury game saying “Who’s Caitlin, I’m here for [Diana] Taurasi.”
Following those messages from WNBA fans, the Mercury posted a highlight reel of Taurasi with the caption, “We’ll take our six-time gold medalist any day of the week, thank you.”
Taurasi and Clark have a deep rivalry, which has been one of the biggest storylines of the 2024 WNBA season.
While they’ve been vocal about their respect for one another, Taurasi stirred the pot during Clark’s senior season with the Iowa Hawkeyes after she said, “Reality is coming” for the incoming rookie.
Clark has shown some growing pains, but she’s been one of the best rookies the league has ever seen, currently posting 17.1 points and 8.2 assists per game.
Clark and Taurasi went head-to-head on Jun. 30, where the Fever defeated Phoenix 88-82 in the desert. Taurasi finished the game with 19 points and three steals, and Clark recorded 15 points, 12 assists, and nine rebounds.
Both guards are extremely talented, but the 42-year-old is on the tail end of her career, and it seems the torch is being passed to Clark. The Mercury may not agree with that statement, but the stats have backed up Caitlin Clark’s league takeover.
