‘Me dropping trees, clearing snow, shouting ‘timber’: Mike Tyson’s last opponent before Jake Paul now lives a very different life despite beating ‘Iron Mike’ | HO

The last opponent of Mike Tyson’s legendary professional boxing career lives a very different life 20 years on.

Tyson’s professional career came to an end in 2005 after 20 years in the sport.

He won all five heavweight world titles during his career, and was infamously known for the famous ear-bite fight against Evander Holyfield.

His defeat to Buster Douglas in Tokyo, Japan was one of boxing’s biggest-ever upsets, while he recorded famous victories over Frank Bruno, Michael Spinks and Larry Holmes.

But his career all came to an end in June 2005 when he was on the end of a stoppage defeat to Irish boxer McBride.

Tyson retired on the stool after the sixth round, giving his opponent the victory via technical knockout. ‘Iron Mike’ called time on his legendary career after the fight.

McBride, who had just turned 32 at the time of his career-changing victory, wasn’t able to build on the win and subsequently lost six of his next eight fights.

His final fight in 2011 saw him knocked out in the fourth round by Mariusz Wach, and he ended with a professional record of 35-10-1.

Now, McBride lives a different life completely.

Speaking ahead of Tyson’s exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr in 2020, McBride revealed that he is now a tree surgeon.

“I work with a tree surgeon now,” he explained. “He has me dropping trees, clearing snow, shouting ‘timber’, and all that. It is good.

“It keeps me busy. My job is I pick things up and I put things down.

“It [the Tyson fight] is coming up more often at the moment because every time they say about him making a comeback, they say I was the last guy to beat him. I like that.

“I don’t sit around re-watching the fight, but someone put a clip on Facebook recently and I saw it. Dream come true, isn’t it?”

Jake Paul would have been the fighter to attempt to end McBride’s long streak as the last man to beat Tyson last month, as the pair were due to take on each other in an exhibition fight.

But the fight was postponed after ‘Iron Mike’ suffered an ulcer flare-up on a plane flight, and it has been rescheduled for November 15.
