The WNBA has chosen its top players to represent the USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but the limited roster spots mean that not every deserving player could be selected. One prominent omission is Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark, who did not make the Team USA cut.

This decision has generated considerable controversy among WNBA fans, many of whom are disappointed by Clark’s exclusion. While those involved with Team USA have defended their choices, some are still questioning whether Clark deserved a spot on the team.

In a recent interview on the Bloomberg Business of Sports Podcast, Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, addressed the matter. Hirshland supported Team USA’s decision, stating, “When you look at the whole thing in totality, I would say USA Basketball has had a very disciplined process with people who know more about the sport of women’s basketball than anyone else in the world. And I trust that they know exactly what they’re doing.”

WNBA fans believe that including Clark on Team USA would not only enhance the team’s popularity but also boost ratings, even if she had a limited role. However, Hirshland and Team USA are confident in their selection process and are committed to avoiding any favoritism or “jumping the line” for individual players. Fortunately for fans, Clark is only 22, leaving plenty of opportunities for her to compete in future Olympics.

Caitlin Clark is currently having one of the most exceptional rookie seasons in WNBA history. In just 26 games, she has set eight rookie records and is poised to break more once the league resumes after the Olympic break. Her impressive achievements include setting a new WNBA single-game assist record with 19 assists against the Dallas Wings in the Fever’s final game before the All-Star weekend.

Additionally, she broke the WNBA rookie record for the most double-doubles in a season with five, trailing only Courtney Vandersloot’s six double-doubles among all WNBA players. Despite also holding the record for the most turnovers in a single season, Clark’s passing skills are highly praised, with Hall of Famer Rebecca Lobo calling her “the best passer in the league” on SiriusXM NBA Radio. Fans are eagerly anticipating Clark and the Indiana Fever’s return after the WNBA’s Olympic break.
