We’ll start with the confrontation in April 2013. Young Jon Jones intended to defend his championship belt for the fifth time against Charles Sonnen at UFC 159. Despite Sonnen’s recent loss to Anderson Silva, his hype and attention were more than enough for another title opportunity. They shared the Octagon in the main event, but the build-up to the event interests us the most.
Sonnen declared, “I got a call from Dana. He said, ‘Chael, I’m putting you to work. I overpaid for this light heavyweight who I now realize is a jerk.’ I could take Jon Jones down anytime I wanted to. I’m a two-time national champion and have a silver medal from the World Championships. So, when I say, ‘Jon, as you run into another tree, do whatever it takes to stay away,’ because you don’t want to fight me. I was signing college scholarships when this kid was climbing up on his dad’s knee for a couple of quarters because he heard the jingle of the ice cream truck. I’m going to put my chin down, walk across that cage, and put him on his ass. Jon Jones, you will find out the hard way why you never challenge Chael Sonnen to a fight.”
Jones responded concisely, “Chael is crazy, so it doesn’t count. He’s a ruthless, disrespectful promoter. I take the gentleman seriously when we’re talking, and I take the fighter very seriously when I see veins popping out of his neck.”
In the main event, Jon Jones showed his domination, smashing Chael in a one-sided fight, leaving him no chance. Jon Jones has finished the fight.
In December 2018, Jones fought Alexander Gustafsson in a significant fight after re-entering the title race post-suspension. Gustafsson, after wins over Glover Teixeira and Jan Blachowicz, believed he was Jones’ kryptonite. Gustafsson claimed, “I’m bringing something he can’t handle. I’m here to take over. Nothing stays in the body for one and a half years. I’m prepared for the best Jon out there, clean or not. I’m going to beat him.”
Jones responded, “This guy is terrible. He’s not confident at all. He’s terrible.”
Despite competitive opening rounds, by the third round, Jones accelerated, took Gustafsson down, and mauled him until the referee stopped the fight. Jones won the UFC belt again, showing his dominance.
The climax of Jones’ career is his confrontation with Daniel Cormier. Their hatred for each other grew over time. Cormier said, “Jon Jones is going to walk in with his title, but in the third or fourth round, he will let go and say, ‘Daniel, take it.'”
Jones won their first fight by unanimous decision and then demolished Cormier in their rematch at UFC 214, finishing him in the middle of the third round.
Despite Cormier’s disappointment, he acknowledged, “Thank you for everything, Daniel.”
