WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes has made headlines on several occasions this year with her polarizing takes on Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark.
During the most recent episode of the “Gil’s Arena” podcast, Swoopes drew ire from Caitlin Clark fans when she said the No. 1 pick is not dominating the WNBA competition in her debut campaign.
Clark has shattered multiple league records, including the single-season records for both rookie points and assists.
“I still don’t think she’s dominating, but she’s a different player than she was in the first half of the season,” Swoopes said.
Swoopes also suggested the overwhelming attention on Clark — both positive and negative — has brought locker room issues to the Indiana franchise.
“There’s a lot of other s*** going on, that players are like ‘This ain’t where I want to be,'” Swoopes said. “You have players that are very significant on this Indiana Fever team that are like ‘I don’t know if this is where I want to be.'”
When asked what she was hearing to prompt this suggestion, Swoopes did not give any credible source.
“I’m not in the locker room. I don’t know. I’m not even on the team,” Swoopes said.

Swoopes specifically referenced the fact All-Star Aliyah Boston deleted her social media account after receiving backlash during the Fever’s 1-8 start. Swoopes suggested Boston may want to leave because of the attention Clark brings to the Fever franchise.
“So what happens when Aliyah ain’t playing well again?” Swoopes asked. “So, as a player, do you want to continue to stay in a situation where you keep yourself vulnerable to all of the hate that you know is going to come to you if you’re not playing the way everyone thinks you should be playing?”

Swoopes also said All-Star Kelsey Mitchell, an upcoming free agent, could benefit from leaving the organization.
“Not every player who’s a free agent should leave because the grass probably ain’t gonna be greener for you,” Swoopes said. “But a player like Kelsey Mitchell — Kelsey Mitchell could be very valuable to any team.”
On multiple occasions, both Boston and Mitchell have publicly stated how much they enjoy playing with Clark.
The Fever will close their regular-season schedule with a game against the Washington Mystics on Thursday.
