Boxer disciplined for gender, female opponent loses after 46 seconds
Imane Khelif won her first match, beating Italian Angela Carini after 46 seconds. The Algerian was allowed to compete in the women’s event despite previous controversy over her gender.
Immediately after entering the ring, Imane Khelif’s flurry of punches knocked off the Italian’s chinstrap, forcing Carini to duck for defense. Carini then left the ring to readjust the chinstrap, but upon returning to the center of the ring, the Italian immediately quit.
The final victory came to Khelif after only 46 seconds of play.
Khelif won the match in just 46 seconds, ending the fight quickly. The Italian boxer cried after the match and admitted that he only knew how to obey the decision of the organizers, even though his opponent had been disciplined for gender.
“I went into the ring to fight. I didn’t give up, but the punch hurt so much that I thought it was enough,” Carini told ANSA news agency after the fight. “I left with my head held high,” the Italian declared.
Angela Carini burst into tears after the match
Khelif’s participation in the women’s event has been controversial since she was disciplined and disqualified from the women’s world boxing championships last year. The official website of the women’s world boxing championships said Khelif was disqualified hours before the gold medal final against China’s Yang Liu in New Delhi after her testosterone levels failed to meet regulations.

Taiwan’s Lin Yu-Ting was also disqualified from that tournament for similar reasons. According to feminist website Reduxx, both are believed to be affected by “Differences of Sex Development (DSD).” The International Boxing Federation (IBA) issued a statement saying that their decisions were made after careful consideration.

Ahead of the 2024 Olympics , the Italian Olympic Committee expressed concern that their representatives would have to face Khelif. They contacted the International Olympic Committee and asked it to reconsider the issue to ensure the rights and health of female athletes.
But the fight went ahead as the IOC did not reverse its earlier decision to allow the Algerian to compete. Despite the controversy, Khelif was still a legitimate winner. She will compete in the quarter-finals of the women’s 66kg category on August 3.
