Deadpool & Wolverine brought an extremely lavish and magnificent “cameo party” to satisfy the expectations of fans, and partly to pay tribute to the previous superhero versions outside the MCU. In it, the audience met many familiar faces such as Wesley Snipes (as Blade), Jennifer Garner (Elektra) or Chris Evans (Human Torch). And of course, we cannot fail to mention the different versions of the werewolf Logan himself in the Marvel multiverse.

Hugh Jackman is clearly still the perfect Wolverine for many fans. However, Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster also brings another Wolverine variation that many people have been hoping for and wishing for for many years: That is the version played by Henry Cavill, the actor who has appeared in many hypotheses, dozens of rumors, thousands of “conspiracy theories” surrounding this mutant character, especially after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and started planning to reboot the entire X-Men brand.

For the fan community, Henry Cavill was once the number 1 choice for the role of Wolverine in the “post-Hugh Jackman” era.

After the Logan project (2017), Hugh Jackman officially said goodbye to Wolverine and even confirmed that he would not return to this role. That is why when Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, there were many heated discussions on the Internet regarding the new cast of X-Men in general and Wolverine in particular. Henry Cavill emerged as a strong candidate after proving his talent through the role of Superman in DCEU, and some other action-heavy projects such as The Witcher or Mission: Impossible.

However, up until the time before Deadpool & Wolverine was released, the information about Cavill playing Logan was still just “for fun” in the fan community. The actor, along with some other names such as Daniel Radcliffe or Taron Egerton, were considered the most perfect choices, with the only drawback perhaps being Cavill’s height – a factor that was somewhat superior to the original. However, at that time, it was all just a somewhat distant wish of the audience, especially when Marvel Studios was still quite leisurely in exploiting characters related to X-Men.

Rumors are exploding about Henry Cavill playing Wolverine in Captain Marvel 2

In early 2020, the news about Henry Cavill being chosen to play Wolverine suddenly became “hot” again, with many reputable sources mentioning this issue, including Just Jared and Forbes. These sources indicated that Cavill would appear in the second solo film of Captain Marvel (which was still untitled at the time). This was the time when Henry Cavill’s name was very famous thanks to the success of the first season of The Witcher series, along with many interesting behind-the-scenes stories revealing the “nerd” side of the actor. That is why the rumor that he joined the MCU in the role of Logan made many fans restless.

However, after all, Captain Marvel 2, or more accurately The Marvels, does not have the participation of Henry Cavill, and also does not have the participation of Wolverine. Instead, the post-credits scene of this film revealed the return of Kelsey Grammer as Beast – the only mutant from Fox to appear in The Marvels. It is unclear whether Marvel Studios changed the script during production, but in the end, the rumor involving Henry Cavill seems to be just a fictional legend, known to many but no one is sure how much truth there is in it.

Dreams come true with Deadpool & Wolverine

After The Marvels, Henry Cavill continued to appear in rumors related to the MCU. However, few people still believe that the actor will play Wolverine. Instead, fans now want him to become “tough” characters like Hyperion, Sentry, Doctor Doom or Captain Britain – superheroes that Cavill himself has not hesitated to express his love and is ready to play if given the opportunity.

But at a time when few expected it, Henry Cavill actually became Wolverine, or more precisely a variation of Wolverine, in the MCU multiverse. This can also be considered one of the biggest surprises that Deadpool & Wolverine brought, and the reaction of the immortal mutant Wade Wilson probably spoke for thousands of superhero movie fans.

Specifically, when meeting the version of Wolverine played by Cavill (also known as Cavillerine), Deadpool immediately turned into a true “fanboy”, continuously expressing his extreme joy, while also promising that Marvel would definitely treat the actor better than others. This can be seen as a “mockery” aimed directly at DC for wasting Henry Cavill’s role as Superman, especially when he had a surprising cameo in Black Adam, but was cut from the role shortly after, when James Gunn took over and decided to destroy and rebuild the DC cinematic universe.

Cavillerine only appeared for less than 1 minute in Deadpool & Wolverine, but that was enough to make the audience, especially longtime Marvel fans, restless. Their reaction was the clearest sign showing how much they were looking forward to the “former Superman” returning to the MCU with an official, long-term role.

What are the chances for Cavillerine in the future of the MCU?

Will Henry Cavill return to the MCU as Wolverine?

As of now, neither Henry Cavill nor Marvel Studios have released any official information regarding Cavillerine’s future in the MCU. There has been information that the studio is actively negotiating, with a huge salary, to turn Cavill into the official Wolverine in the MCU’s X-Men series. However, all of this is just at the level of rumors and there has been no official confirmation.

Marvel Studios is focusing on building and completing the rest of the Multiverse Saga and may save the X-Men for later stories. Therefore, it is still too early to talk about the new X-Men cast of the MCU, although Marvel has “chosen” Michael Lesslie (who participated in the project The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) for the role of screenwriter of this film. According to some sources, the mutants will only be exploited from phase 7, considered the Mutant Saga, after the Multiverse Saga ends.

It should be noted that Henry Cavill is now 41 years old, and it will probably take at least 4-5 years for Marvel Studios to release a solo film project of Wolverine or X-Men. Therefore, it is likely that Cavillerine is just a cameo to satisfy fans, and Marvel Studios will look for younger faces to take on the official version of Wolverine in the MCU. However, with an actor who has proven his ability in superhero movies and possesses an ideal physique like Henry Cavill, age may not be too big of an issue, and Marvel can also consider if the actor is really suitable for the vision they have for Wolverine and X-Men.
