Chad Stahelski Wants To Present A New Style of Sword Fighting With Henry Cavill’s Highlander
Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery in Highlander | 20th Century Fox
Henry Cavill is set to become Connor MacLeod in the upcoming Highlander reboot directed by Chad Stahelski. The John Wick director wants to push the boundaries with the sword fights in the show like he did with the gun-fu in the John Wick franchise. In an interview with Collider, the director revealed what keeps him up at night regarding the upcoming film.
Stahelski stated that he has the right cast and trainers for the film, but the challenges of making something creatively unique and special with the action is what concerns him. He does not want to bore audiences with the typical way of sword fighting and wants to find a new trick that will attract audiences. He said,
We’ve dug up some of the best sword people I’ve ever met in my life in the last six months, that are helping us. It’s more about how do you bring it all together and make it something. It’s not Princess Bride, it’s not Crouching Tiger, it’s not Master & Commander, it’s not Zorro.
So I’m more worried about, ‘Am I going to bore you with a movie about sword fighting?’ What’s this new look of action or sword fighting that people could be excited about? That keeps me up at night.
The director also revealed that he will soon go for a final location scout in Scotland and will begin production on the film in January 2025. It remains to be seen how Stahelski updates the 1984 classic for modern audiences and the innovation he brings to its action sequences.
