Henry Cavill's Wolverine smoking a cigar in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Cavill’s Wolverine cameo is set to make it arguably even harder for the MCU to officially cast a new Wolverine for their main universe. Besides Troy Sivan, who portrayed a young Logan in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Cavill is the only other actor to portray an adult Logan alongside Hugh Jackman. Every other Wolverine in the multiverse that Wade Wilson visits is still played by Hugh Jackman, showing how intrinsically tied to the character Jackman is.

Now that the two live-action adult Wolverine castings are comprised of Hugh Jackman and the years-long popular fancast Henry Cavill, anyone aiming to take on the role after this is set for perhaps an even greater challenge. Whoever gets the chance to play Wolverine for the MCU once Jackman is officially done has big shoes to fill, with the prospective future Wolverine looking like one of the most important casting decisions Marvel will have to make when the time comes.

The MCU Has To Live Up To Deadpool & Wolverine’s Wolverine Highlights

Deadpool & Wolverine featured some of the best Wolverine moments fans have ever gotten. Hugh Jackman’s Logan was heartfelt and a few of his monologues felt like he was at the very top of his game as the character. Throw in the comic-accurate suit and cowl, and the return of Jackman as Wolverine already solidified him as one of the best heroes the MCU has ever had. Hopefully, this wasn’t the very last time audiences will see the character, with Avengers: Secret Wars around the corner.

The MCU will now have to live up to expectations following Hugh Jackman’s triumphant return as Wolverine, and contend with the excitement of seeing Henry Cavill cameo as the character. Hugh Jackman has played the character for over two decades, making it almost impossible to imagine anyone else in the role. Still, Jackman can’t do it forever, and if the MCU wants to have the X-Men be a significant part of the universe, they most likely will need to recast him at some stage. After Deadpool & Wolverine, it will be difficult to live up to those immense expectations.

Zack Snyder was right about Henry Cavill and his presence in superhero movies. The DCEU learned that lesson the hard way, but the MCU has the chance to change that. Even though Cavill’s role in Deadpool & Wolverine was most likely a one-off appearance as Wolverine, the excitement around him appearing shows that there would definitely be merit in Marvel finding a spot for him somewhere in its main universe.
