Matthew Vaughn says Henry Cavill came close to playing James Bond over Daniel Craig

Argylle director Matthew Vaughn has recently revealed that Henry Cavill came very close to playing the role of James Bond in the early 2000s before Daniel Craig secured the role.

Vaughn along with Henry Cavill and his Argylle co-star Sam Rockwell appeared on Sirius XM to promote their latest spy film.

During the interview, Vaughn shared that Casino Royale director Martin Campbell preferred Cavill over Craig for the James Bond role, but producer Barbara Broccoli picked Craig because Cavill was too young at that time.

“When Henry was auditioning for Bond, I was at Pinewood, right? And Daniel was as well at the same time.”

“I’d go off and meet with Daniel and [I’d] say what’s going on, and he said there’s this young guy, Henry Cavill I think they’re seeing as well [for the auditions],” ‘

Vaughn told Cavill in the same interview: “It got down to the last two for Bond… And I know that the director preferred your audition. But [producer] Barbara [Broccoli] preferred [Craig].”

“So, just so you know, and they decided you were too young.”

Cavill, who still remains a fan-favourite for the role of 007, said that Craig “did an amazing job” with his portrayal of the iconic spy character, which began with 2006’s Casino Royale.

Henry Cavill noted, “He and everyone else involved breathed new life into the franchise, which did it wonders,”

Despite being considered too young in the past and now probably too old for the role of James Bond, Cavill’s career has thrived without needing that additional boost. His performances as Superman and Geralt of Rivia have established him as a star in action and fantasy genres.

Cavill is set to produce and take the lead in a Warhammer 40k project.

He is also starring in Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
