On July 28 (French time), the basketball match between South Sudan and Puerto Rico experienced an unintended incident. Specifically, the organizers had played the wrong national anthem for South Sudan as the players from both teams were preparing to compete.

Upon discovering this issue, after a brief moment of surprise, the fans as well as the members of the South Sudan basketball team present at the event quickly expressed their frustration. They waved flags and reacted to stop the incorrect national anthem from continuing.

South Sudan basketball coach Royal Ivey spoke about the incident, emphasizing that “This carelessness is a lack of respect for a country trying to assert itself on the world sports map.”

Despite the national anthem mishap, the South Sudan players still stood solemnly, hands on their hearts. This action not only demonstrated their pride, but also sent a powerful message to fans around the world.

After the incident, the correct national anthem of South Sudan was played and received thunderous applause from the audience.

Player Nuni Omot shared his feelings: “We felt disrespected when the incident happened. So we will continue to strive to prove our capabilities to the world.”
