“I then realized that I was on the outside of my door – and I had no clothes on,” Henry Cavill said on Late Night with Seth Meyers
Yes, even supermen sometimes find themselves naked and petrified.
Henry Cavill appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday, where he revealed that shortly after getting cast as Superman, he found himself in a rather awkward situation that he thought would cost him the role.
Cavill, 32, had traveled to Los Angeles to meet with director Zack Synder, as well as his new personal trainer, and after a few drinks with his agent the actor found himself suffering from some serious jet lag.
“I passed out a big jet-lagged and I woke up to the sound of my door closing in my hotel room,” he said. “Of course, I then realized that I was on the outside of my door – and I had no clothes on.”
The Batman v Superman actor explained that in a sleepy haze, he had mistakenly gone out of the front door – and locked himself out – on his way to the bathroom.
“Being naked in the hallway is a pretty big problem, but I needed to pee and I was desperately thinking, ‘Where am I going to pee?’ ”
“So naked was secondary for you at this point,” Meyers asked.
“At this stage, very secondary,” said Cavill as he explained how he immediately started searching for plant pots and other places he could answer the call of nature.
After climbing the fire escape in search of a bathroom, Cavill realized he had no choice but to use nature as his bathroom.
“I just peed off the top of the hotel,” he said. “I felt like a little boy again.”
But his problems were really just beginning.
“Then it dawned on me that I hadn’t quite solved the problem because I was locked outside my hotel room naked – and on the roof now,” he said.
Cavill had no choice but to walk naked down to the lobby to ask for a new key.
“I walked into the reception, and I said to the receptionist, ‘This is really embarrassing. I locked myself out of my hotel room. Can I have my key to get back in.’ And he says, ‘Yeah, of course. What room are you in?’ Doesn’t bat an eye!” he laughed. “Doesn’t even look up. And I was thinking, ‘How often does this happen at this hotel? Why have I met no one else in the hallway at this stage, high-fiving naked dudes walking past?’ ”
Eventually, Cavill was escorted upstairs and let back into his room, where he was free to be naked in private.
“I didn’t sleep for the rest of that night and I was pretty sure I was going to have been caught on camera and lost the job.”
But in case you were hoping to see a naked Superman roaming the hallways during your next hotel stay, sadly, the actor learned his lesson.
“I now put chairs up against the doors of every hotel I sleep in,” he insisted.
