Boxer suffers horrific thumb injury in round one but still throws 497 punches to win epic title fight
Ginny Fuchs battled through extreme adversity to become the interim WBC interim super flyweight title champion.
On Saturday night, she picked up a split decision win over Adelaida Ruiz on the undercard of Eddie Hearn’s show at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Fuchs broke her thumb in the first round and kept throwing
Fuchs felt a sharp pain in her hand in round one but fought through it.
At that point, she thought it was simply a jammed thumb. But the pain persisted throughout the fight, which ended with her throwing a staggering 497 punches.
Ultimately, she eked out a split-decision win after 10 rounds.
As she removed her gloves post-fight, Fuchs finally got to see what was bothering her and found out she’d suffered an injury much worse than expected.
The 4-0 boxer needed immediate medical attention as her thumb bone was protruding out of her skin – but she decided to do an interview instead of going to the hospital.
“I felt it the first round, I think it was a hook I’m pretty sure,” Fuchs causally explained while nursing one of the most gruesome injuries in boxing history.
“I just thought I jammed it really bad. I was like ‘Oh.’
“But it kept hurting through the fight, but I just tried to ignore it,”
“And then when I took my glove off I was like ‘Oh s***! I broke it!'”
After her interview, Fuchs went to hospital to get her injury checked.

Boxing manager George Ruiz posted an image of her being carted off on a stretcher.
And he added the caption: “Ginny broke her thumb in the first round and then went on to fight 10 hard rounds without complaint.
“We had no idea until she took the gloves off.
“Absolute warrior. And now world champion.”
Later, former unified female super-featherweight world champion Mikaela Mayer shared an extremely graphic picture showing the extent of the damage to Fuchs’ thumb.
Fuchs is yet to reveal the official diagnosis or her return timeline.
Whenever she is fighting fit again, a unification clash with Ashley Gonzalez, who holds the proper WBC super flyweight title, is sure to be on the cards.
