Following Gervonta Davis’s decisive knockout victory over Frank Martin, which retained his WBA title, early discussions with IBF Champion Vasiliy Lomachenko were derailed when Lomachenko withdrew due to a lack of motivation. This has paved the way for a potential clash between Davis and Stevenson.

In a recent interview on the It Is What It Is podcast, Mayweather, who previously mentored Davis before their split, highlighted the distinct strengths of each fighter. He identified Davis as the premier puncher in the lightweight division, noting his impressive knockout record. Conversely, Mayweather praised Stevenson for his exceptional skills and defensive prowess, calling him the most skillful fighter at 135 pounds.

Mayweather emphasized that skills can be just as crucial as power, drawing a parallel to Pernell Whitaker, who was known more for his technique than his punching power. He expressed hope that Stevenson, who is nearing the end of his contract, will secure the fights he desires and reach the next level of his career.

Stevenson’s team has been in discussions with both Mayweather and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom, while Davis remains with PBC. According to Davis’s co-trainer, Kenny Ellis, the only reason the fight might not happen next would be if Stevenson exhibits fear.
