Frank Bruno, a beloved figure in British sport, has weighed in on a hypothetical matchup between boxing legends Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis during their prime years. Bruno, who has faced both fighters in his illustrious career, shared his insights on “The Criminal Connection Podcast.”

Bruno’s career spanned 45 fights, marked by perseverance and determination. He finally clinched the WBC world heavyweight title in 1995 by defeating Oliver McCall, the same boxer who had previously upset Lennox Lewis. Bruno faced Lewis in 1993 but was stopped in the seventh round.

Bruno’s encounters with Mike Tyson were even more challenging. In 1989, Bruno was knocked out by Tyson in the fifth round while attempting to win the IBF, WBA, and WBC titles. Their rematch in 1996, which was Bruno’s last professional fight, ended similarly with Tyson securing a knockout to reclaim the WBC title.

When asked about a fight between a prime Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis, Bruno’s response was emphatic. He believed Tyson in his prime was unparalleled.

“Tyson in his heyday was on a different level to any boxer that was around at that time. I think Lennox got him at the right time when he was worn out and old, the spark in him went. If he had him when I fought him or when he was young, 21, 22, different class.”

Bruno recalled his early experiences with Tyson, highlighting the intensity and danger Tyson brought to the ring. “He was a dangerous guy, you know. I remember sparring with Tyson when I was 18, 19. I went over to America and stayed at the Gleason’s Gym. Classy place. Spent some time with him in his gym and he’s a dangerous human being.”

While Lennox Lewis has long been retired, Tyson remains active in the boxing world, albeit in a controversial manner. Tyson is set to return to the ring in November to fight Jake Paul, a man nearly 30 years his junior. This upcoming bout has stirred debates and divided opinions among boxing enthusiasts.

Frank Bruno’s perspective on a prime matchup between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis provides a fascinating insight into the capabilities and legacy of these two boxing giants. According to Bruno, Tyson’s prime years showcased a level of dominance and danger that would have been unmatched even by a prime Lennox Lewis. As the boxing world continues to evolve, reflections on past legends like Tyson and Lewis remind fans of the sport’s rich history and enduring allure.
