Oleksandr Usyk recalls the last defeat of his boxing career, which came in 2009 against Russian rival Egor Mekhontsev at the Amateur Boxing World Championships. The Ukrainian star, who has since achieved immense success, was left furious after the controversial semi-final loss.
Usyk, now an undisputed heavyweight champion, faced Mekhontsev in a bout that many believe he should have won. Reflecting on the match, Usyk told Boxing King Media, “I was furious because in my opinion I didn’t lose. The judges helped my rival. But after the fight, I prayed and accepted the outcome, thanking the opportunity given to me.”
The match, held in Milan, saw Mekhontsev advance to the final after a decision that Usyk and his team disputed. Mekhontsev went on to win the gold medal, defeating Usyk’s former conqueror Clemente Russo in the final.
Despite the setback, Usyk’s career trajectory soared. He went undefeated for the next 15 years, becoming an undisputed champion in both the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions. In 2018, Usyk claimed all four cruiserweight belts by beating Murat Gassiev. He then moved to the heavyweight division, where he defeated notable opponents like Anthony Joshua and Derek Chisora.
In May, Usyk made history by outpointing Tyson Fury to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion in the four-belt era. This victory solidified his status as one of the greatest fighters in the history of the division.
Usyk and Fury are set for a rematch on December 21, where Usyk hopes to maintain his undefeated record and further cement his legacy. This bout promises to be another significant milestone in Usyk’s illustrious career.
