Oleksandr Usyk has vehemently denied accusations that he used performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) during his victory over Tyson Fury. The Ukrainian boxer was falsely accused of using an inhaler during the fight, a claim that emerged from a misinterpreted snapshot where he was seen kissing his crucifix.
Usyk, who became the undisputed heavyweight champion by defeating Fury on points in May, faced rumors after some fans believed they had seen him using an inhaler. The use of inhalers is illegal in boxing, as fighters are only permitted to use water and Vaseline during bouts, with energy gels also banned.
Addressing the rumors, Usyk told Boxing King Media, “Stupid people. Listen, I never used any substance. Never. I’m clean. The cross, it’s my doping. My belief is my doping. Jesus, my family, my team, my country – this my doping.”
Footage of the fight showed Usyk in his corner putting an object to his mouth, which was either water or his crucifix, debunking the theory that he used an inhaler, a device typically used to treat asthma by improving cardiovascular health.
Despite the accusations, Usyk’s performance in the ring was dominant. He even threatened to secure a stoppage during a ninth-round onslaught. His victory over Fury solidified his status as the undisputed king, but their rivalry continues with a scheduled rematch on December 21.
However, the rematch will not feature the undisputed crown, as Usyk had to vacate his IBF title, which has since been awarded to Daniel Dubois. Despite his loss, Fury remains confident, claiming he had the upper hand during their first encounter.
Fury shared his thoughts on his YouTube channel, saying, “I’ve watched the fight back lots of times and still got the same answer – I thought I won the fight. Usyk knows he didn’t beat me. I thought I boxed the head right off him for most of the rounds.”
As both fighters prepare for their rematch, the boxing world eagerly anticipates another thrilling encounter. The December showdown promises to be another chapter in the storied rivalry between Usyk and Fury.
