The problem, however, wasn’t Williams’ toughness. It was the lack of protection from his offensive line. Without a strong front, even the most talented quarterbacks are left vulnerable, and Williams was no exception. Despite his best efforts, the Bears’ offense couldn’t get into a rhythm. McFadden pointed out that no matter how talented a quarterback is, without protection, especially on the road, success is nearly impossible. “It’s going to be a long outing for you,” he added.

The Bears’ offensive line, a unit that was expected to perform better this season, appeared disjointed and confused, especially on third-down plays. Anytime the Texans brought extra pressure, the line seemed unsure of their assignments. The result? Williams running for his life.

C.J. Stroud: Calm Under Pressure

On the other side of the field, C.J. Stroud, Houston’s second-year quarterback, faced his own challenges. The Bears’ defense, widely regarded as one of the best in the league, applied significant pressure on Stroud, forcing him out of the pocket multiple times. However, Stroud showed remarkable composure, demonstrating his ability to make plays even when things broke down.

While his stat line—23 completions on 36 attempts for 260 yards and one touchdown—wasn’t eye-popping, Stroud’s performance under pressure stood out. His calm demeanor and decision-making ability drew comparisons to some of the NFL’s top quarterbacks. McFadden noted that Stroud’s ability to improvise outside the pocket reminded him of Patrick Mahomes, particularly in how he kept his eyes downfield looking for open receivers.

“When C.J. breaks containment, he’s not looking to run, he’s looking to hit the open pass catcher,” McFadden observed. “And what I’m seeing from C.J., he’s starting to remind me a lot of Pat Mahomes when he is outside of the pocket.”

Stroud’s development has been impressive, and even though this wasn’t his best game statistically, his ability to remain poised in the face of a tough defense was a testament to his growth as a quarterback. The Texans’ offensive line, while not perfect, provided enough support to allow Stroud to make plays and lead his team to victory.

The Bears’ Offensive Woes
For the Bears, the loss highlighted a number of issues, most notably with the offensive line and play calling. The protection breakdowns were glaring, and the team’s inability to adjust to the Texans’ pressure left Williams exposed for much of the game. In addition to the struggles in pass protection, the Bears’ running game was virtually nonexistent. DeAndre Swift, brought in to provide balance to the offense, managed just 18 yards on 14 carries—a dismal showing for a player expected to take pressure off his young quarterback.

The lack of creativity in the Bears’ offensive play calling was also a factor. McFadden expressed confusion at why the Bears moved away from their initial game plan, which featured quick, rhythm-based throws to get the ball out of Williams’ hands early. “Shane Waldron [the Bears’ offensive coordinator] came out with a nice game plan to start the game off, but then in the second half, he kind of got away from that,” McFadden said.

As the game progressed, Waldron’s adjustments—or lack thereof—put even more pressure on Williams. With no running game to lean on and an offensive line that couldn’t protect, the young quarterback was left to shoulder the entire burden of the offense. McFadden was clear in his assessment: “You cannot ask your young rookie quarterback to also lead your team in rushing.”

Houston Texans: A Team on the Rise
For the Texans, the win was a step forward in their pursuit of playoff contention. With Stroud at the helm, the offense has shown flashes of brilliance, even if this wasn’t their best performance. More importantly, the Texans’ defense stepped up in a big way, making life difficult for the Bears all night long. This defense, which has often been overshadowed by the offense, was the key to Houston’s victory.

Despite some quiet performances from key offensive players like Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell, the Texans found a way to win, thanks in large part to their defense. Nico Collins emerged as a key target for Stroud, and while the offense didn’t put up huge numbers, they did enough to secure the victory.

McFadden, who visited the Texans during training camp, believes this is a championship-caliber team. “They look the part… C.J. Stroud is progressing in this offense, and their defense has gotten better,” he said. While the Texans may still be a young team, they have all the pieces in place to compete for a title, provided they can stay healthy.

Looking Ahead

The Texans, now 2-0 for the first time since 2016, sit atop their division, while the Bears fall to 1-1. As the season progresses, both teams will face their share of challenges. For the Bears, improving their offensive line and establishing a running game will be critical if they hope to protect Caleb Williams and give him a chance to succeed.

Meanwhile, the Texans have their sights set on the postseason. With C.J. Stroud continuing to develop and the defense stepping up, Houston looks like a team that could make some noise in the AFC.
