Derrick White was on such a roll as an NBA champion for the Boston Celtics and gold medal recipient in the Paris Olympics for Team USA. Unfortunately, all those good vibes were marred in the form of a violent altercation during Saturday’s Colorado vs. Colorado State football game in Fort Collins.
TMZ reported on the story, and obtained video where White gets truck by an opposing fan, leading to a brawl of sorts, presumably between rival fans:

For all the crap pro athletes have to take — especially basketball players, who are in such close proximity to hostile fans attending their games — I could see how a little liquid courage and the wrong insults could trigger them to threaten someone physically. Doesn’t mean I agree with it, but then again, why are plebs at a sporting event White isn’t even playing in picking fights with him?
The upside for either instigating party to get involved is so minuscule. In fact, I’d argue there is zero upside. It’s a terrible look for either instigator to brag about hitting somebody with a cheap shot. Leave that to Angel Reese and her teammates when they truck stick Caitlin Clark to remind us of that. Don’t do this, Derrick.
It’s inconclusive as to who initiated the White fight, which I motion as a catchy rhyming moniker for this scuffle to enter the greater sports zeitgeist. I’m so over fights at sporting events. Hell, one altercation at a postgame tailgate party in Detroit led to a fatal shooting on Sunday. Although that’s an extreme case, I’m just against people getting hammered and getting violent with each other over something that’s supposed to literally bring everyone together. Stupid people who talk smack and egg on others to the point of a fist fight should be banned for life from any major sports arena.
How did this happen in Colorado of all places, by the way? I suspect approximately zero marijuana was consumed among all these quarreling morons. White probably didn’t have “getting into a fight” on his Colorado bingo card. I thought everyone there was supposed to be chill. Guess not! People are asking if the Colorado football program’s lack of class is rubbing off on the rest of the state following this scuffle. I’m starting to wonder, too!
PS, love the dude at the end who stepped in and said, “Don’t you lay a hand on Derrick White!” That’s about to be the biggest basketball meme early in the new NBA season.
