Jill Scott stands by praise of ‘amazing’ and ‘beyond gifted’ rapper Chris Brown despite backlash from fans
Jill Scott stood by her praise of Chris Brown after receiving backlash for supporting the rapper following his recent diss track targeting Quavo.
The 52-year-old Grammy-winning singer took to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday to gush about Brown, 34, who recently scuffed up his Lamborghini.
‘@chrisbrown is amazing. How does ANYBODY sing like THAT? Dance, look, Act and Rap… like THAT? Beyond gifted. It appears, exceptional people have to go through exceptional [fire emoji[. There’s nothing to debate,’ Scott posted on Sunday morning for her more than 1 million followers.
‘I think the women he’s abused would disagree,’ a comment countered.
Scott then replied with a personal story about her mother’s ‘mean’ ex-husband who also had cementing skills.
‘I doubt it,’ Scott posted in response. ‘My Mother’s ex husband was a mean, violent human AND he could lay foundation better than anyone in my city. What he did with cement was awe inspiring. We got away. He got a raise and praise for his ability. God dealt with the rest.’
Another X user expressed her fondness for Scott while being critical of her post.
‘I love you Jill but he has so many domestic abuses cases it’s ridiculous we can’t look past that,’ the post read.
Scott replied: ‘I love you too. I’m not here to fight anymore else’s battles. If/since women hear the stories, they should avoid that street. Running backwards in moving traffic makes zero sense. Therapy for every damn body.’
Commenters also accused Scott of ‘victim blaming’ while being critical of her support for Brown, who pleaded guilty to felony assault in June 2009 after a domestic dispute with Rihanna in February 2009 that caused severe facial injuries requiring her hospitalization.
Scott in another post on Sunday addressed the backlash.
‘Look. Years of prayer, therapy, self reflection, & making every effort to keep my feet on the ground has made me compassionate for other human beings,’ she posted. ‘People go through [poop emoji] and do terrible [poop emoji] . We say we believe in God ; pray for enlightenment. We ARE a living testimony.’
She added: ‘And I caution those who refuse to forgive because they will undoubtedly need forgiveness at some point in their lives. We’re all flawed and need help. Power to people who move past violence. The past is a terrible reminder AND the future is ours.’
Scott’s comments about Brown’s talent appeared to be in reaction to his viral diss track against fellow rapper Quavo, 33.
Brown dropped Weakest Link last week and blasted the Migos rapper by saying everyone wished that he was killed instead of his nephew Takeoff.
Takeoff, 28, was shot and killed in November 2022 at a Texas bowling alley and Quavo also was there at the time of the shooting.
The track was in response to Quavo’s recent song, Tender, in which he called out Brown’s history of domestic abuse.
The title of the song is a throwback to what Brown called Quavo’s status in the rap collective Migos.
Brown, who is going on tour, also detailed an incident where he ran into Quavo at Fashion Week and resisted the urge to beat him up.
He also took aim at Quavo’s violent past, including the time in 2021 where he fought rapper Saweetie in an elevator.
As explosive as those lyrics are, they pale in comparison to the lines Brown drops about his ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran whom Quavo went on to also date.
‘You f**ked my ex-ho, that’s cool, I don’t give no f**k, lil n***a,’ he raps. ‘Cause I f**ked yo’ ex when you were still with her, b***h, I’m up.’
It is not clear if Brown is referring to Saweetie or another woman. However this nugget of news reveals that the beef between the two rappers is more serious than fans had previously known.
To be fair, Quavo hit Chris where it hurts – he went after his history of beating ex-girlfriend, Rihanna.
In Tender, Quavo raps: ‘You did the b***h wrong and now the b***h gone, she posted with a thug… Call the b***h phone, she won’t come home, don’t beat her up/It must be the drugs, need to cross out your plug.’
In the second verse he says: ‘Tell me lil bro, what’s your issue?/It’s over a t**t/You said it’s bigger than that, but no, it is not/It’s cause I be digging in that, it got ’em hot/I’m giving respect but I know you not/Your b***h on my neck, your b***h at the spot.’
