Whoopi Goldberg reveals she ‘couldn’t breathe’ when she was 300 POUNDS – and insists weight loss drug Mounjaro was ‘the only’ thing that helped her
Whoopi Goldberg has revealed that she had a hard time breathing when her weight soared to 300 pounds in 2021 – and credited weight-loss drug Mounjaro with helping her to turn her life around.
Earlier this month, The View host, 68, revealed that she used the medication in 2021 while filming the movie Till after she said she unsuccessfully tried a number of other methods to try to slim down.
Now, she has opened up about her decision to try Mounjaro even further, explaining to Page Six in a recent interview that it not only helped her shed pounds, but it also improved her overall health.
She explained that she had been taking steroids following back surgery that messed up her ‘metabolism’ and led to her gaining so much weight.

She said her weight got so severe that she ‘couldn’t breathe,’ and that Mounjaro was ‘the only way’ the doctors could ‘jumpstart [her] system.’
‘It was a lot of weight for me to be carrying, and I didn’t realize how much weight I was carrying,’ she said.
‘I saw myself every day, and it didn’t look strange to me, but then I couldn’t breathe. I was 300 pounds. I was like, “Oh, please, God, make this work.”‘
Whoopi first made the admission that she had used the drug on her show, The View – while defending fellow TV star Oprah Winfrey, who had confirmed that she used Ozempic in her ABC weight loss special, Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution.
‘I had taken all those steroids, I was on all this stuff and one of the things that has helped me drop the weight is the Mounjaro… That’s what I use,’ she said at the time.
Her cohost, Sunny Hostin, also confessed to using it, while revealing that she had gained 40 pounds during the COVID pandemic.
‘All I did was eat… I love to cook and I found out I love to eat and I was horrified by the fact I would have to come out on here,’ she said.
‘I also took Mounjaro and I got all these nasty emails and things. [They said]: “You’re too skinny and… you’re taking it away from diabetics.”

‘So there is shame when you’ve gained weight. I had never experienced that kind of shame before and what I loved about what [Oprah] said is obesity is a disease, right?’
‘What I will say is if someone has diabetes and they’re being treated for diabetes it’s fine.
‘When someone has some sort of cardiac disease, that’s fine. They’re not shamed for it but when someone is obese, they are shamed for it.
‘I found my cholesterol went up to 200 when I gained the extra weight and I used Mounjaro and my cholesterol is 140 now. I feel better, I look better and that’s what it is about.’
During their chat, Whoopi called on people to ‘stop judging everybody’ over their appearance.
‘Maybe that’s the key. Because, listen, when I realized how much I had put on… I [still] felt like me. And then I saw me and I thought, “Oh, that’s a lot of me,”‘ she quipped.
‘And my weight has come and gone up and down but it’s never been an issue for me because I don’t listen to what other people say about me, so it has never been a problem.
‘But I think it’s very hard for people to just know what a normal weight would be.’
In her special, Oprah said the drugs had meant she was no longer ‘constantly thinking about what the next meal is going to be.’
She said ‘for 25 years, making fun of her weight was national sport’ and that since starting the medication, she had stopped ‘obsessing’ about food.
