Peaky Blinders creator says Cillian Murphy ‘definitely is returning’ for new movie
“We’re shooting it in September,” Steven Knight revealed.
Original series creator Steven Knight just revealed that newly-minted Oscar winner Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role for a new follow-up movie to the fan-favorite British crime drama.
“He definitely is returning for it,” Knight told Birmingham World at the premiere of his new BBC series The Town. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth [England].”
Murphy previously confirmed to EW in 2022 that he was interested in revisiting Tommy Shelby in a follow-up movie. “I do hope we’ll make a film and Steve is very keen to make a film,” Murphy said at the time. “There is more life in the old dog yet, I think.”
Peaky Blinders first debuted on BBC Two, moving to BBC One in 2018 for its fifth season, but reached new popularity when it began streaming on Netflix. The period drama originally aired 2013-2022 for six seasons following gangster Tommy Shelby and his Peaky Blinders crew, loosely based on the real Birmingham gang’s exploits in the aftermath of World War I.
“We’re going to end the series as it is at the moment, but we’re going to do the movie, which we’ll shoot in 18 months time, maybe a little bit longer… After that, according to how the film structure falls into place, we’ll set in motion some spinoffs that will be part of the same universe.”
The Peaky Blinders expanded universe is finally coming together. Someone get Murphy into a three-piece suit, peacoat, and newsboy cap, stat!
